چکیده

An approach to vision-based vehicle localization by viewing corridors as a combination of right parallelepipeds is proposed. The objective is to derive the orientation and lateral position of a vehicle in a right parallelepiped corridor. These two kinds of information are all that is needed for vehicles to navigate safely in a right parallelepiped corridor. This approach offers low hardware cost and simple computation. Only one camera mounted on the vehicle is needed, and analytic formulas are derived for computing the vehicle location. The information source is the corridor ceiling. Two orthogonal sets of parallel lines on the corridor ceiling are used to detect the vanishing line of the ceiling. An equation is developed to derive the vehicle orientation by utilizing the detected vanishing line. Also, based on the observation of the variation of image line slopes when we move laterally, another equation is established to evaluate the relative lateral position of the vehicle by utilizing the line slope of the ceiling line pointing forward. Experiments have been conducted, and acceptable vehicle localization results have been obtained, to prove the feasibility of the proposed approach.

We present a real-time vision navigation and ranging method (VINAR) for the purpose of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) using monocular vision. Our navigation strategy assumes a GPS denied unknown environment, whose indoor architecture is represented via corner based feature points obtained through a monocular camera. We experiment on a case study mission of vision based SLAM throug...

Determining the absolute orientation in a corridor using projective geometry and active vision

The capability of a mobile robot to determine its position in the environment (self-localization) is a prerequisite for achieving autonomous navigation. An approach is proposed for determining the absolute orientation of an autonomous robot in a system of corridors, based on the projective geometry and active computer vision. In the proposed approach, the common direction of longitudinal corrid...

Landmark-Oriented Visual Navigation of an Unmanned Vehicle along Corridors

This paper presents a landmark-oriented visual navigation system for unmanned vehicles (UMVs). An extensible knowledge-based parser is implemented through a syntactic approach for the recognition of T-junctions and crossroads of corridors. In addition, both geometrical perspective and flat-earth models are adopted to estimate the distances from objects to the front of a UMV. With our steering c...

Robust Horizon and Peak Extraction for Vision-based Navigation

Most vision based UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) navigation algorithms extract features such as horizons and mountain peaks from 2D input images, and match the extracted features with features obtained from DEM(Digital Elevation Map) by process of registration. The difficulties of the horizon and peak extraction originate from the variations of input images such as noise, viewing direction, and ...
